Understanding Salvation

This might sound strange to you, but what if I told you that I’ve somehow compared Covid_19 to Salvation? Of course, nothing compares to Eternity with God, but what I mean is how both of these things can be viewed at times.

Let me explain…

I, like some people, didn’t believe in this new virus. Back in January when I first heard of this virus, I simply brushed it off as I tend to do with things that all of a sudden go viral. And to be honest with you, I didn’t believe in it for the longest time until a relative of mine had her husband passed away because of it. I know this is a touchy subject and my heart does go to all those who’ve lost someone to this virus and through any unforeseen event as a matter of fact.

There are so many things that come to my mind, even things such as believing that the government has something to do with this in order to make money, but ya’ll my mind works fast and creates all sorts of movies in seconds that aren’t always necessarily true. There’s so many concerns and unanswered questions even as I sit here on my office chair with a blanket over my shoulders and an empty red, white and black Mikey Mouse tea cup on my table. And guess what? I tested positive to Covid_19 this past week.

So, how does Salvation and Covid_19 fit together in one blog post?

I’ve been one not to believe a virus was real until I heard of someone in my family pass away, to then my parents contracting it, and then experiencing the symptoms myself. I’ve known people who wouldn’t dare to leave the house for months and then somehow still test positive even if they did all the right things in order to not contract it.

How many people live life thinking that simply because they do all the right things and are good people will obtain salvation?

As long as we’re breathing we’re all subject to getting this virus, and as long as we’re dying we’ll all end up face-to-face with God on judgement day whether we believe in Him or not.

We can disinfect everything and do all the right things to not get sick, but this doesn’t guarantee us Covid_19 free living. We can also be on our best behavior, never tell a lie and do all the right things, but even this doesn’t save our souls unless we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior.

"Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures." ~John 10:9

Scripture clearly tells us that “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” ~Romans 10:9-10

Salvation cannot be earned by what we do or do not do. Jesus, whom had no sin, paid the price for us on the cross. This is grace and grace is giving a gift to someone that doesn’t deserve it. None of us deserve what Jesus did for us, but He still chose to suffer for our salvation because He loves us, flaws and all.

Those who have been saved by God’s grace delight in obeying and glorifying their savior.

"But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statures and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die." ~Ezekiel 18:21

"For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live." ~Ezekiel 18:32

Through Jesus Christ we all have an opportunity to repent and turn from our sins and old ways of living to live a life worth living. This doesn’t mean we will never sin a agin nor that life will be perfect by any means, but that fact that we live as unconditionally loved people by God whom delights in our need of Him. He wants us to need and adore Him and He offers us the gift of the Holy Spirit so that we may live lead by Him and not our flesh. (You can read about the fruits the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23).

God has created you to do good works. (Ephesians 2:10) He’s called you to walk in the newness of life as you love God and love your neighbor.

Lord, thank You that through repentance, I can receive the free gift of righteousness through Jesus Christ. Although my sins deserve death, Jesus is the giver of new life and I pray to learn how to live lead by the gift of the Holy Spirit from now on. And when I am tempted to think I can earn my right standing before You, help me to trust in Christ’s finished work on my behalf. In Jesus’ name, amen.
