Okay, so let’s say that you have now accepted Christ as your Lord and savior. You are what most people like to call, “baby Christians” and really desire to obey God and hear from Him. You’re so excited about it, but now you are confused and feeling overwhelmed by not fully understanding where to begin. This is exactly how I felt a few months ago! But guess what? Once you get involved in small groups at your church and seek wisdom, you begin to peel the onion little by little until your heart is on fire wanting to know more! Who needs Netflix shows when you have so much action in your bible!?!
How do I obey God?
Simple. Study God’s word! It’s like injecting medicine for the soul. 😉
We can’t simply obey rules and regulations anywhere if we don’t understand or know what they are…
The moment you became baptized, YOU made the choice to leave your old selfish ways in order to live the life God wants you to have. Your sins were forgiven. All of those things that you used to do, (drugs, sex before marriage, infidelity, lying, stealing, etc..) are no longer who you are. Notice that when you gave into your flesh and did all those things, you might have found out that the joy in the moment was never long lasting fulfillment. The only thing that lasted was the feeling of shame and guilt. “But what fruit were you getting at that timeframe the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.” ~Romans 6:21
“But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and having been set free from sin, have become slaves to righteousness.” ~Romans 6:17-18
What if my flesh is weak?
It’s very hard to break a bad habit, especially when they are things we did not know were harming us at the time. In the beginning of our walk with God, our minds can easily convince us that what we do, may not be as bad as we think after all. Besides, everyone does it, right?
“So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.” ~Romans 7:21
It is very common for temptation to come when we want to do the right thing. Our minds want to serve the law of God, but our flesh wants to serve the law of sin. Could it be that we magnify the negatives and the things we used to desire more than what the truth is? Focus on what you want more of than what you know is not right. Trade pleasure for peace!
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on things of the spirit…Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” ~Romans 8:5, 8:8
(If you want to keep in step with the spirit, look at Galatians 5:16-25.)
Good news!
YOU have been saved by faith! You took a chance and decided to pick up your cross and live a new life. Yay!!! The more I have learned about God’s word, the more I begin to realize that He does know peoples deepest desires and he delivers exactly what we need. You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” ~Romans 8:15 Realize that the Holy Spirit is in you, and He guides you to through the right paths as you learn to obey.
And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” ~Romans 8:27
God knows your deepest desires. Share with him all that you want, and as long as it is in His will, he will provide. He gives us what we NEED and takes away what we don’t, always for our own good.
Will you obey God’s law?
Trust God, and Do Good… 🙂
